Progression of Moon Rocks

This piece was inspired by lava rocks we saw in Hawaii.  They give great abstract designs.  I coated the paper with black gesso tinted with Thalo blue fluid acrylic.  When dry, I added diluted white gesso, covering it with various types of plastic, and wax paper.  I worked one element at a time. Some areas, I simply spritzed some alcohol onto the semi dry paint and watched what happened.  When dry, I went over with thinned fluid acrylics in gold, thalo blue, red iron oxide, and some ultramarine blue.

Moon Rocks Diptych
Then I set it on the mantle a while and decided it needed some symbols or lines.  I cut out my designs using sticky back foam, like the kids use for art projects.

After sitting long enough to find the orange foam too garish, I decided to follow the patterns and use copper paint, and paint skins to unite the rocks.  I cut it into two pieces and am going to present it as a diptych.
Right now, I feel like moon rocks fits for a title.
This is the reference photo I used  for my inspiration.  Lava from the Big Island of Hawaii

Enigma in Gray Accepted by Capitol Hill Hotel.

Well it has simmered for over a week, with little tweeks here and there.  The #50 has been in and out, and I think this is where I sign it and hang it.  All it needs is a title.

Untitled just yet, 36" wide by 48" tall, the biggest painting I have done to date.

Strokes of Genius

What a wonderful surprise I had this morning.  There was an e-mail from the Maryland Federation of Art's notifying me that my painting, Abstract Landscape, was accepted in their Strokes of Genius Show.  I am honored and thrilled to be part of this show and offer special thanks to the juror, Mark Karnes.  The show will be on exhibit at the MFA Circle Gallery in Annapolis from November 2 - 24, 2012 with the opening reception November 11th, from 3 - 6 pm.

BTW:  This painting was declined for the Art League Gallery's Scapes show in August.  You just never know which juror will appreciate a piece of your art.
